New Zealand Northern Island blog 2/2. Tongariro, Lake taupo, Mt. Taranaki

My first part of my travels throughout the Northern Island of New Zealand can be viewed here.
The last part of our northern island New-Zealand travels.  As a start I would like to introduce the Tongariro Alpine crossing; a 20 km hike (or 7,5 hours in our case) through one of the shooting scenery of “the lord of the rings”(mount Doom!). The hike is steep and a challenge so my advice is to wear hiking boots. At the top of the mountains you’ll see incredible blue pools with a breathtaking view. This is one of the MUST things to do in New Zealand. Leave early; take at least 2 liters of water and enough food with you!
Lake Taupo is another MUST thing to visit in New Zealand. It’s stunning with its blue water and animals. If you have time you should definitely kayak to the Maori Rock Carvings.
Unfortunately we skipped Hawke’s bay and its pretty city Napier. Instead we decided to drive west to Mount Taranaki, which had some similarity with Mount Fuji in Japan. It’s a sleeping volcano which covers a great part of the area.
From there on we drove all the way down towards Paekakariki, a very beautiful and small town.
We had to catch the ferry early in the morning and had no idea about the horrible traffic in Wellington. We made it just in time! So leave early otherwise you might see the ferry sail away without you.

Het laatste gedeelte van onze reis over het Noordereiland van Nieuw Zeeland. Om te beginnen is er de Tongagiro Alpine crossing. Een must thing to do op de lijst van velen en met een reden. Het is een hike van 20 km (oftwel 7,5 uur) dwars over shoot locaties van Lord of the rings (mount Doom). The klim is heftig en steil dus wandelschoenen zijn een aanrader. Bovenop de top zie je onrealistisch mooie blauwe poelen en het uitzicht is zoals op een ansichtkaart. Vertrek wel op tijd en neem minstens 2 liter water en genoeg eten mee.
Nog een prachtige plek is het Taupomeer. Prachtig blauw en groot met veel dieren. Als je tijd hebt is een kayak tocht naar de Maori Rock Carvings ook een aanrader.
Helaas moesten wij Hawke’s bay skippen met Napier. In plaats daarvan reden wij naar het westen om Mount Taranaki te bezoeken. Het is een enorme slapende vulkaan wat wel iets weg heeft van Mount Fuji in Japan. Vanuit daar zijn we naar beneden gereden tot Paekakariki, een prachtig mini plaatsje langs de kust. De volgende dag moesten we al vroeg naar Wellington om de ferry te halen. Wisten wij veel dat het verkeer muurvast kan staan rondom deze plaats, met veel geluk hebben we het nog kunnen halen. Voor wat minder stress kun je beter vroeg genoeg vertrekken.
